What does it mean to be a teacher?

Hello, all. I've enjoyed reading your reflections about your sense of yourself as a teacher. I can relate to your feelings of uncertainty--you are both tentative and excited about your new professional role. I'm glad that you all seem to be _open_ to various ways of being and that you see yourselves changing over time. A teacher identity, like any kind of identity (one could argue), is always in flux and changes as you grow and learn. A teacher, in particular, can never stop learning. The key is a reflective mindset and at least a pseudo-awareness of the kind of teacher you are developing into. Therefore, you can make changes if you see the need, and you can also give yourself credit for successful changes and positive growth. We all need some positive reinforcement every now and then!! I believe teaching to be one of the most difficult, but most rewarding, professions.

The Primal Teen discussed, albeit in a vary general way, how brain research can enlighten our views of teenagers. While the author doesn't talk about teaching specifically, I think it's easy to make connections between her comments/summaries and teacher behavior. I think when we talk about miscue analysis tomorrow we can continue to make connections between such larger theories and specific classroom practices.

See you in the morning,
Janet
