Do kids need to learn grammar? Kind of. Do they need to know that what a transitive verb is or is not? Probably not. Do they need to know things like don't use contractions in formal writing but feel free to do so in a blog? Probably.
If you would be so kind as to bear with my stream of thought: I feel like a huge portion of grammar "application" is to just not sound like an idiot when you are in the public sphere. I highly doubt that most of the kids are going to be asked if they know the difference between an adjective and an adverb. However, when the kid is applying for a job and clearly does not understand that a sentence needs at noun AND a verb....well then the employer is going to think that they are stupid.
So does grammar need to be taught? I think so. Maybe not with one unit that will easily be forgot. Perhaps it can be done in "mini-lessons" that take up five minutes of each day.
