In response to Mary's comment about wanting to connect with students and not be the "teacher that tries to hard to be cool," in all actuality, we are not that much older than our students and I would guess too out of touch with what they are interested in, listen to, watch, and do in their spare time. I don't foresee it being that tough for students to relate to our students; chances are we will be some of the youngest teachers in the building. I don't about everyone else, but when I was in school I always gravitated to the younger teachers because I felt like I could form a better connection to them. If a teacher establishes early on that they are a caring teacher who has an interest in his/her students I believe that reputation will follow as the teacher ages and the students move on.
Now for the readings, I really enjoyed reading the chapters from the Tovani book. The author gave some valuable suggestions; however, it made me think about whether or not I'm a "good" reader according to her criterion. I think every person has different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to reading, so can there be a set of criteria that defines a good reader?
